Doc Paulin Brass Band
Doc Paulin wasn't able to be with the band that day. As I remember,
most of the band members are related to Doc. I didn't get their names,
unfortunately.
The brass bands always appear at Economy Hall with a Social Aid and
Pleasure Club. The SAPCs were originally mutual aid societies for black
people in New Orleans, from the days when segregation prevented them
from getting conventional insurance, banking services and the like. In
occasions that called for parades (such as weddings and funerals), SAPC
members would march behind the band wearing fancy costumes and carrying
parasols and fans to protect themselves from the sun. These marchers
were called the "second line," since the band came first in the parade
and the marchers were second. Second-lining has become a cross between
marching and dancing that is done for its own sake, even when there is
no parade. Many people come to Jazzfest and second-line whenever
appropriate, danceable music is played.

The woman on the right is my friend
Ann Abler. We met at Jazzfest
several years ago. She is an avid
second-liner, and is especially proud
of her shoes.
