On the evening of May 1, the next-to-last day of Jazzfest, Daniel Breaux was murdered by four muggers as he was leaving the festival. Breaux was an artist who painted portraits in New Orleans' Jackson Square. He was also a social worker for the federal VISTA program and a self-taught musician. He was a Jazzfest regular who often danced at Economy Hall.

The killing cast a cloud over the last day of Jazzfest. Gregg Stafford and his band hosted a jazz funeral for Daniel Breaux, with mourners marching around the tent. They often do mock jazz funerals in Economy Hall, but this was the first time I saw a real one. I didn't take pictures of the funeral, as I felt it would have been disrespectful.

There was also a pause in the program where Silvia Barker, the daugher of Danny Barker, came out and spoke. Danny Barker was a guitarist who performed with Henry Allen, Buster Bailey, Luis Russell, Pops Foster, Paul Barbarin, J. C. Higginbotham, Benny Carter, Sam Price, Wellman Braud, Chu Berry, Roy Eldridge, Sid Catlett, Cab Calloway, Doc Cheatham, Milt Hinton, Cozy Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Jonah Jones, Ziggy Elman, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Shavers, O'Neil Spencer, Albert Nicholas, Adrian Rollini, Lucky Millinder, Wilbur de Paris, Teddy Wilson, Billie Holiday and others. He was married to Blue Lu Barker, whom he also performed with. He was a mentor to many current New Orleans jazz musicians, including Gregg Stafford, Dr. Michael White, Shannon Powell, Lucien Barbarin, Leroy Jones, Tuba Fats (recently deceased) and Wynton Marsalis.
